Procyclidine Dosage: An Introduction
The dose of
procyclidine hydrochloride (
Kemadrin®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- The medical condition being treated
- How you respond to procyclidine (especially if you develop side effects)
- Other medications you are taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Procyclidine Dosing for Parkinson's Disease
For most people, the recommended procyclidine starting dose is 2.5 mg three times daily (after meals). If you tolerate this dose well, your healthcare provider may increase your dose to procyclidine 5 mg three times daily (after meals) or even four times daily (after meals and at bedtime).
Procyclidine Dosing for Extrapyramidal Symptoms
For treating
extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) due to
antipsychotic medications, the recommended starting procyclidine dosage is 2.5 mg three times daily (after meals). Your healthcare provider will increase your dose as necessary. Most people do well with a dose of 10 mg to 20 mg total per day.
Procyclidine Dosing for Excessive Drooling
There are no specific recommendations for the dosing of procyclidine to treat excessive drooling due to
Parkinson's disease or antipsychotic medications. It is reasonable to start with the standard dosing recommendations for treating Parkinson's disease or EPS (2.5 mg three times a day).
