The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Cogentin® (benztropine mesylate) for the treatment of:
- Parkinson's disease and other similar conditions (when used in combination with other medications)
- Extrapyramidal symptoms (movement or muscle tension disorders) caused by antipsychotic medications.
The brand-name tablets are no longer available, although the injectable version still is. Generic versions of Cogentin tablets are made by various manufacturers.
Most people tolerate this medicine well; however, safety information on Cogentin should be reviewed with your healthcare provider so you are aware of possible side effects and potential drug interactions, and so you know what to do to avoid complications.
