What Is Coenzyme Q10 Used For?

How Does Coenzyme Q10 Work?

Coenzyme Q10 has several different functions within the cells of the body, such as:
  • ATP production -- Coenzyme Q10 is important for the production of ATP, an important molecule in the body. ATP provides the energy for most processes within the cells. The production of ATP occurs within certain structures in the cell known as mitochondria.
  • Antioxidant effects -- Coenzyme Q10 acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidation damage from free radicals. It also helps cells "recycle" other antioxidants, such as vitamins E and C.
  • Membrane stabilization -- Coenzyme Q10 may protect and stabilize cellular membranes.
These are just a few of the ways that researchers think coenzyme Q10 may work. As more studies are done, more information will become available.

Is Coenzyme Q10 Used in Children?

Coenzyme Q10 is probably safe for children when taken at reasonable doses under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Do not give your child coenzyme Q10 supplements without the approval of your child's healthcare provider. Children normally have high levels of coenzyme Q10, and healthy children are not likely to benefit from supplementation.
