Bromocriptine Dosage

The usual starting bromocriptine dosage for treating hyperprolactinemia is 1.25 to 2.5 mg once daily with food. For the treatment of acromegaly, most people start also with 1.25 to 2.5 mg once daily. For these uses, your healthcare provider may increase your dose every few days until results are seen. The recommended bromocriptine dose for treating Parkinson's disease is 1.25 mg twice daily.

Bromocriptine Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of bromocriptine mesylate (Parlodel®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The medical condition being treated
  • How you respond to bromocriptine (especially if you develop side effects)
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Bromocriptine Dosing for Hyperprolactinemia

The starting bromocriptine dosage for treating hyperprolactinemia (or any of the conditions associated with hyperprolactinemia, such as infertility) is 1.25 to 2.5 mg once daily with food. Your healthcare provider may increase your dose by 2.5 mg every two to seven days until results are seen. Most people end up at a dose of bromocriptine 2.5 to 15 mg per day.

In order to avoid prolonged exposure of a fetus to bromocriptine, it is recommended that a barrier method of birth control (such as condoms) be used by women who start taking bromocriptine, at least until regular menstrual cycles are established. If pregnancy is desired, the contraceptive can be stopped once regular cycles are established. If you are more than three days late for a menstrual period, you should take a pregnancy test, since bromocriptine should usually be stopped once pregnancy is achieved (see Parlodel and Pregnancy).
