The recommended Azilect dosage for people not taking other Parkinson's disease medication is 1 mg once daily. The starting recommended dose is lower for those who are already taking other Parkinson's medications or who have liver disease, usually 0.5 mg once daily. If needed, your healthcare provider can increase your Azilect dose to 1 mg a day to control your symptoms.
Azilect Dosage: An Introduction
The dose of
Azilect® (
rasagiline mesylate) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- Other medications you are taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Azilect Dosage for Parkinson's Disease
If you are already taking other Parkinson's medications (especially levodopa medications, such as
Sinemet®, Sinemet
® CR,
Parcopa®, or
Stalevo®), the starting recommended dose is lower: Azilect 0.5 mg once daily. If necessary, your healthcare provider may increase the dose to Azilect 1 mg once daily in order to help control your
Parkinson's disease symptoms. Also, many people who add Azilect to a levodopa medication will need to use a lower levodopa dosage, especially if side effects occur. Your healthcare provider will determine when (and if) you need to lower your levodopa dosage.
For people with mild liver disease, the maximum Azilect dose is 0.5 mg once daily. Azilect is not recommended for people with moderate or severe liver disease.
For people taking certain medications that increase the level of Azilect in the blood, the maximum recommended Azilect dosage is 0.5 mg daily. These medications include:
- Ciprofloxacin (Cipro®, Cipro® XR, Proquin® XR)
- Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
- Lidocaine
- Methoxsalen (8-MOP®, Oxsoralen®, Oxsoralen-Ultra®, Uvadex®)
- Mexiletine (Mexitil®)
- Norfloxacin (Noroxin®)
- Ofloxacin (Floxin®)
- Primaquine
- Thiabendazole (Mintezol®).
