Artane Dosage: An Introduction
The dose of
Artane® (
trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- How you respond to Artane (especially if you develop side effects)
- The medical condition being treated
- Other medications you are taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Artane Dosing for Parkinson's Disease
The usual starting Artane dosage for treating
Parkinson's disease is 1 mg once daily. Your healthcare provider may gradually increase your dose (by increments of 2 mg every three to five days) until your symptoms are controlled or up to a maximum of 15 mg total per day. Usually, it is recommended that the daily Artane dose be split up into three smaller doses taken at meals, or if higher doses are taken (more than 10 mg total per day), into four smaller doses per day, at meals and at bedtime.
Be aware that lower doses are often necessary when Artane is combined with levodopa products (such as
Sinemet®, Sinemet
® CR,
Parcopa®, or
Stalevo®).
