Artane and Breastfeeding

Since no studies have been conducted on Artane (trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride) and breastfeeding, it is not known whether the drug is safe for breastfeeding women. Many healthcare providers will not recommend Artane to breastfeeding women because of the severe side effects associated with the drug. Before starting Artane, breastfeeding women should talk to their healthcare providers about any potential risks.

 

Can I Take Artane While Breastfeeding?

Currently, it is not known whether Artane® (trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride) is safe for use during breastfeeding, as it is not known whether it passes through breast milk in humans. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking Artane if you are breastfeeding or plan to start.
 
No studies have been conducted on whether Artane passes through breast milk. Because Artane can cause severe side effects (such as an intestinal blockage), many healthcare providers are not comfortable recommending this medication for breastfeeding women. Also, most people who take Artane also take other medications, many of which cannot be used while breastfeeding.

You should talk with your healthcare provider about Artane and breastfeeding. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision about Artane and breastfeeding that is right for you.
